Central Eye Hardware Sets

8312 Double straps and pins are our best hardware combination for larger field gates, rail gates, and entrance gates. They combine heavy duty construction and strength with easy adjustment. Each set includes (12”, 18”, or 24” 8312 central eye top strap, adjustable bottom gate fitting and two pins (either 8800 or 8317). Double strap hinges sandwich the wood between the straps, virtually locking the corner at 90 degrees square. This prevents the gate from sagging.

Typical Behind Posts Installation Gate overlaps the post by 0.5” to 1.0”. This method is used extensively in europe as the gate is fully out of the way when open. uses 8317 pins with square shaft to prevent the pins rotating.

Behind Layout

If the gate is hung behind the posts the gate is constructed so it is at least 1" wider than the opening between the posts. Square posts are recommended. Pins with square shaft (#8317-022) should be used to prevent pin rotation along with the Adjustable Bottom Fitting, which allows for easy adjustment of the gate height at the latch end. There are several advantages which include:

Allow for 1/8" to1/4" of space between the gate and the post.
The gate opens a full 180 degrees so it is completely out of the way when open. This reduces the chances of injury to animals and catching the gate with equipment when driving through the opening.
When dealing with livestock, such as horses there is tendency to push on gates rather than pull them back into the field which reduces the risk of animals escaping. In the UK this tends to be the norm.
